Crazy Nap Lady: Why We Need Our Zzzz's

I’m soo hungover. Yeah, like stayed-up-until-2:00-AM-hungover, guilty. I remember the days when 2:00 AM was the time Uber would arrive to pick us up from the bar. It’s because of this incredible hangover that I felt inspired to write on my NEED for sleep.
.
I’m one of those people who absolutely cannot function without a decent amount of sleep (I’m talking 8-10 hours on a good night)…so damn annoying. I’m sure most of you are thinking, oh must be nice. Well actually, no. If I get anything less, I’m not a functioning individual, it’s like I go through the motions + don’t even remember if I started my car after I’ve driven around the corner.
.
If you’re someone who is NOT like me + lives surviving on like 5 hours of sleep, first off, what the shit, + second off, I hope you know that’s not the healthiest way to go. It’s so bad that the CDC has recently called the lack of sleep a ‘public health epidemic.’
.
Because I have been so obsessed with sleep my whole life, I have read + read + read about it, so I can have legitimate facts to back up my “I need 8 hours of sleep a night” gig + of course I’m going to share my most important finds with you.

For almost half of the US, more sleep would be of great benefit in our lives.
.
A FEW REASONS WHY I’M ON TEAM SLEEP
.
  • Curb inflammation, which is your bodies ability to restore our health or respond to an injury. Sleep increases our bodies ability to heal, protect + repair.
  • One of the more obvious reasons, sleep lower stress. By increases your memory, creativity, + attention, resting will allow for more balanced levels + maintain lower levels of stress. I can speak from experience that I am a much happier person with a bit more sleep.
  • You’ll have better sex + be happier. Sleep increases testosterone levels, which results in a much better sex drive. You’ll both be happy, no grouchy pants, well no pants at all, ha.
  • Healthy Skin, hence, no dark puffy under eyes- for me some of it is purely genetic, thanks fam, but sleep does prevent the skin from getting worse + prevent signs of aging. Sleep can also help rejuvenate the skin + aid in keeping your skin free from blemishes. This pillowcase is amazing for preventing wrinkles, too.
  • Prevents headaches and other aches + pains. Not getting enough sleep increases our bodies sensitivity to pain. Sleep can increase your pain threshold. Get more sleep + you won’t have those random middle of the day headaches or wake up with a headache bringing you back to your best friends bachelorette party.

Even though I need my sleep, falling asleep is too tough for me. My brain loves to go to work right when I lay my head down. Things like, "did I blow out all the candles", "is my car locked", "did I ship out all of today's orders", are ALWAYS rushing through my mind. Which is why my nightly ritual is so important to me. I looove dropping a bit of lavender essential oil in my diffuser as well as put it on my temples + inside wrist of my palms before bed- the slight scent is so dreamy as I doze off.
Another huge bedtime tip I've learned is to STAY OFF TECHNOLOGY. I know, sounds impossible, right? Try to leave the phone on the charger once you climb into bed. Instead grab a book, I'm really into this one by Sophia Amoruso, or better yet, just lay there + try to get some extra zzz's. Studies show that the light omitted from our devices can really mess with our circadian rhythm. This gives our bodies the cues to go to bed + wake up at the proper times- hello going on an Instagram binge + scrolling through countless numbers of food + dog posts.

This upcoming week, try to focus on your sleep time, make it somewhat of a priority. I have been and always will be HOOKED on Herbal Sleepytime Tea. It tastes delicious + puts me in an almost instant slumber. If tea isn't your jam get an eye mask, a noise machine (Pandora white noise channel works too) or black out curtains for your room. Anything to allow for a more sound + heavy night sleep. Our body + mind need the time to recharge, why not give it to them?
